Pitchers are measured using the 4D Motion System, which delivers an "under the hood" look at body movements, including angles, degrees of rotation and separation, and other data that provide deeper insights than live viewing or even high-speed video. We use both the 8-sensor Expert system and single sensor module to zero in on various aspects of the pitching motion to help drive improvements. Each student then receives a customized spreadsheet which displays her scores versus the target for high-level, efficient pitching, along with recommendations of how to improve areas that require it. All of this is provided at no additional charge.
Sometimes when a student isn't moving correctly it isn't because she doesn't want to or hasn't learned how to. It's because she is unable to due to issues such as muscle imbalances. Fortunately we have a solution for that.
Ken is certified as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) by the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM). As a result, he is qualified to perform static postural and dynamic movement assessments, such as an overhead squat assessment, and then create a program of self myofascial rolling, stretching and exercise to address any weaknesses or muscle imbalance issues. These programs are typically delivered as video playlists that the student can easily follow on her own.
Again, this service is included as part of the overall program rather than a separate charge.
Fastpitch softball players come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of athleticism. Yet the typical approach is to find what works for a small number of high-level players and then try to apply those body movements to everyone else - the dreaded cookie cutter approach.
"Motor preferences" training was developed roughly 20 years ago in France by Volodalen. Over the years it has been (and continues to be) thoroughly researched and applied to athletes of all levels across many different sports throughout Europe. It has only made its way to the U.S. in the last couple of years, brought to this part of the world by Motor Preferences Experts, which is the only organization approved to certify coaches in its techniques. Ken is one of the few fastpitch coaches certified in Level 1, which means he can test athletes for their preferences and make recommendations for training based on those tests.
During profile development Ken will run a series of tests to determine the preferred movement patterns of the player. This process will also determine additional information, including color preference (red or blue), how the player organizes information, which eye is better attuned to sensing quick movement and more. Armed with this information he will then guide the athlete on how to maximize efficiency of movement to help improve performance and prevent injuries.
Ken is one of only a handful of pitching coaches in the country who is full certified in the Square 1 System. This is an innovative program that addresses and often overcomes the neurological causes of pain and performance issues.
Throughout our lives we accumulate a variety of small and major injuries. Often we forget about many of these injuries - but out central nervous system (CNS) does not. Since our bodies are built for protection rather than performance, the CNS will remember that a certain movement resulted in pain and will thus try to prevent the body from repeating that movement. Even when there is no danger. These restrictions can hurt performance by preventing the body from working the way it should.
The Square 1 System is a non-invasive way to "clear" the CNS so the body can perform better. In many cases it can also reduce or eliminate the pain signals the CNS sends out that are associated with certain movements, even though there is no acute injury.
While the official name is Square 1, we often simply refer to it as "voodoo magic" because of the way it quickly delivers benefits. Again, this service is included as part of your program.
Ken has been certified as a Four Star Master Coach by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). To earn this distinction, he completed an in-depth program consisting of eight separate weekend-long courses covering all aspects of fastpitch softball, delivered through the National Fastpitch Coaches College. These courses were held all over the U.S., demonstrating Ken's commitment to continuous learning and becoming the best coach he can be, so his students can become the best players they can be.
